Set during the reign of the Hongzhi Emperor (1487–1505) in the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), the story follows the Japanese Ghost King, who terrorizes Chinese lands. He falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Shi Shi and forces her to marry him. Caolu Jushi, a Maoshan Taoist priest, and his disciple try to stop the Ghost King but fail. Ma Shangfeng, a Ming court official, later helps capture the Ghost King. A battle triggers the gate of the universe, sending the characters across time and space to 20th-century Hong Kong.
